Number Games

Numbers are so much fun and math games are cool!

Up and Down

Multiply by 8 and add numbers in sequence and the numbers in the answer go in sequence too!

1 x 8 + 1 = 9
12 x 8 + 2 = 98
123 x 8 + 3 = 987
1234 x 8 + 4 = 9876
12345 x 8 + 5 = 98765
123456 x 8 + 6 = 987654
1234567 x 8 + 7 = 9876543
12345678 x 8 + 8 = 98765432
123456789 x 8 + 9 = 987654321

Fun with 1s and 9

1 x 9 + 2 = 11
12 x 9 + 3 = 111
123 x 9 + 4 = 1111
1234 x 9 + 5 = 11111
12345 x 9 + 6 = 111111
123456 x 9 + 7 = 1111111
1234567 x 9 + 8 = 11111111
12345678 x 9 + 9 = 111111111
123456789 x 9 + 10 = 1111111111

Palindrome with 1s

(A palindrome is something written the same way forward and backward – check out these answers.)

1 x 1 = 1
11 x 11 = 121
111 x 111 = 12321
1111 x 1111 = 1234321
11111 x 11111 = 123454321
111111 x 111111 = 12345654321
1111111 x 1111111 = 1234567654321
11111111 x 11111111 = 123456787654321
111111111 x 111111111 = 1234567898765432

Number Trick - Same 2 Digit Number

Ask a friend to:

Step 1: Think of any 3 digit number, but each of the digits must be the same. (333, 666, etc.) Keep the number secret from you.

Step 2: Add up the digits.

Step 3: Divide the 3 digit number by the answer to Step 2. Use a calculator if needed. Example: If your friend chooses the number 222, then they now divide 222 by 6 (2+2+2).

Now you surprise them and tell them the answer is 37. Tell them you are getting the mental sensation of the number 37 or something just as magical sounding!

Step 4: The answer is ALWAYS 37.

WOW!

Hand Trick for 9x

(Here are two examples, but it works for all combinations from 9 x 1 up to 9 x 10)

Hold up your hands, palms facing you.

Want to know the answer to 9 x 2?
Fold down the 2nd finger from the left.  How many fingers are up on the left of the folded-down finger?
Answer: 1
How many fingers are up on the right of the folded-down finger? Answer: 8
1 and 8 together make 18, the answer to 9 x 2.

9 x 6? Count from your left thumb and fold down the 6th finger (should be the baby finger on your right hand).
How many before the folded down finger? Answer: 5
How many after the folded down finger? Answer: 4
Answer to 9 x 6 = 54
